Heather Carvell

US Literature

Almost 20 years ago I joined the faculty at McLean and was immediately struck by the passion for children and their learning processes. The administrators and teachers have always been interested in meeting students where they are, guiding them to mine the depths of their potential, and finding pathways to their success. Through all the changes, I have continued to work here because I feel McLean has always fundamentally done what it sets out to do, even if incrementally at times. Our English and literature split is central to a McLean education, because it offers students more opportunities to build foundational skills for any work place, critical, deep thinking, and clear communication. I still pride myself on being able to find literature that students can appreciate, either for its beauty or its controversy. I graduated from Denison University with at BA in Education and English (concentration in Creative Writing). While at Denison, I lived and worked at Ministerios de Amor, an orphanage in Mexico City, which led to my fascination with world literature, travel, and languages. I have been entrenched in teaching for twenty years, which remains my true passion, though I long for the time when I get to read, write, bike, and cook as much as I possibly want. I have two sons who make me laugh every single day, and processing school through their eyes makes me a better teacher.

K-12 College Preparatory School Supporting Bright Students’ Individual Strengths and Challenges.

McLean School is an independent, co-educational, K-12 day school serving Maryland, Washington, and Virginia. McLean has for over sixty years been helping students realize their full potential by providing a comprehensive college preparatory program that emphasizes small classes and differentiated instruction. We embrace both traditional learners and ones with mild to moderate learning challenges – dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and challenges related to anxiety and executive functioning. Many of our students excel in some areas while benefiting from support in others.
