Environmental Science & BiologyBrenda Walter

My Story

I was born and raised in Madison, WI and have spent much of my adult life moving all over the world. I earned a BA in Biology from Grinnell College and a Masters of Public Health from Boston University, with a concentration in environmental health. I am proud to be a first generation college graduate. My first teaching position was with Teach for America in New Orleans, LA. When my husband joined the Foreign Service, we first moved to the Dominican Republic, then Ethiopia, and finally Austria. I have always found meaningful opportunities to work in the fields of education or public health while living abroad. Designing creative, engaging, hands-on science projects that afford students the opportunity to apply new skills and problem solve is a passion of mine. I feel fortunate to be able to share my experiences with my students, as well as my own children. My husband and I have two daughters; Ella and Abby, and two dogs, Jack and Nala. I enjoy running, nature journaling, family history, canoeing, and listening to my kids play the drums and electric bass. Now that we have settled, I have gotten into gardening and enjoy running on our local trails. I am happy to be part of the Science Department.
