SpanishDr. Luisa Alvizu

My Story

I earned a medical doctoral degree from the “Universidad Central de Venezuela” in Caracas, Venezuela, with a specialization in dermatology from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Throughout my life, I have had the opportunity to live in different countries, absorbing their culture and languages. While raising my three daughters, I gave a turn to my career, becoming more interested in wellness and holistic approaches to health. When my twin daughters were diagnosed with some learning challenges and started to attend McLean, I became passionate about complementary approaches to help students who had difficulty with learning. I became a professional Life Coach from IPEC in 2012 and a certified Mindfulness Meditation instructor from Mindful Schools in 2013.  Avid about integrating my degree as an MD with this new approach to serving others, I started blending neuroscience and different techniques of self-awareness to plant seeds of understanding about the power of how our brain works and the potential of growth through the knowledge of neuroplasticity. Over the years, I have been honored to serve the McLean School community and other schools as a Mindfulness Educator with a neuroscientific approach.

Around three years ago, I started working as a substitute teacher at McLean.  This inspired a new professional pathway as an educator in the World Languages Department as a Spanish teacher, where I found a place to share my experience about different cultures, my knowledge about wellness and Mindfulness, with the touch of my journey as a mom of twin daughters about to successfully graduate from college. Their college experience has been imprinted by the foundations and structure McLean gave to them.

As a way to pay it forward, I am grateful for having the opportunity to join the Upper School faculty continuing my endless passion for learning and bringing to our school my knowledge and experience to serve and heal from a new place.
