May 12, 2020

ABC7 News joined our Director of Student and Community Wellness, Frankie Engelking, Director of Community Inclusion and External Relations, Bobby Edwards, and the Mustang Blue Bus, as they made the rounds to pick up meals for Manna Food Center from our #McLeanSchool community members.

Article from ABC7 News:

A school in Potomac, Maryland isn’t using their school bus much since students began distance learning. They decided to give it a few extra miles for a good cause.

“I love having the bus going around town I can see people looking at it as if to say why is a school bus out,” Engelking said.

The McLean School in Potomac is putting their school bus to good use during the pandemic with just a couple of staff members riding around the DMV picking up food donations from students’ homes.

“I like that they are also representing the school with the McLean bus because it’s so cool,” Ethan Bender said.

Frankie Engelking, Director of Student and Community Wellness, said she’s made more than 10 stops with plans to pick up donations every day this week.

Everything is going to the Manna Food Center in Montgomery County. Engelking said she’s motivated to help others and the students are too.

“Students left us pictures on the front door with thank you cards in the boxes,” Engelking said.

“Social distancing along with helping the food banks especially the people who really are in need,” Teddy Howard said.

With the pandemic going on, a lot of people are being affected with their jobs so a lot of people don’t have food,” Bender said.

Engelking said as long as people are going hungry during the pandemic, she will get on the bus and drive where she has to go to get food for people in need.

“We all need to step out of ourselves and the more we do for others the better we feel about ourselves,” Engelking said.
