Associate Director of College Counseling Sally O’Rourke

My Story

I am excited to be part of the McLean School community. My 30-plus year journey in education has included stops as a College Counselor and School Counselor at independent boarding, day, Catholic, and public schools; as an Application Reader for two highly selective universities as a Resident Director and Counselor for A Better Chance and Upward Bound, respectively. The unifying threads throughout my career have been building relationships with students and members of each school community and understanding that no two students are the same; therefore, no two college admissions processes are the same. While I earned my undergraduate degree in History and Religion at Tufts University and my graduate degree in Counseling in Education at The Catholic University of America, my greatest education has been as the parent of three children, two of whom (so far!) have successfully navigated the college admissions process. My goal as a parent is the same as my goal as a College Counselor–to guide students through the college search and application process to find a place where they will be both challenged and supported in their academics, their social-emotional health, and their sense of community and belonging.

When not counseling students, I am a passionate Broadway musical fan and previously served as music director for five productions at Georgetown Prep School. I love puzzles, family game nights, sailing, skiing, and tap dancing, and I am always searching for good mystery podcasts.
