Grade 5Melissa Davis
I am a passionate educator, lifelong learner, and advocate for joyful, inclusive classrooms. I’ve spent over a decade teaching in independent schools, and before that, I worked in the education departments of some of New York City’s museums and cultural institutions. My journey as an educator has been shaped by my deep belief in the power of storytelling and the transformative power of experiential and asset-based learning environments
I hold a Master of Education from the Bank Street Graduate School of Education, an institution that aligns with my progressive, child-centered philosophy. I also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, with a minor in Vocal Music, from Marist University. I have a love of language, performance, and creative expression.
Since moving to the DMV area, I’ve been actively building community and immersing myself in the vibrant local theater and arts scene. In the classroom, I bring a bit of Ravenclaw magic, curiosity, wit, and just the right amount of whimsy to foster a space where students feel inspired to explore, question, and grow.
Throughout my career, I’ve continued to expand my practice through professional development in Responsive Classroom, Project-Based Learning, Environmental Humanities, and more. I’ve participated in the Religious Worlds of New York Program with the National Endowment for the Humanities and Teach the District with the DC History Center. I’m also deeply committed to building inclusive communities, having led affinity groups for both students and adults, and facilitated workshops on integrating technology into teaching.
Outside of school, I live in Washington, DC, with my fiancée and our dog, Cobain. I’m an avid traveler with a goal to set foot on all seven continents (still working on Antarctica and Australia!), and I’m always on the lookout for a new adventure, a great play, or a beautiful piece of artwork.
