My Story

I’m a fan of Middle Schoolers, especially their ability to stretch toward new ideas, their readiness to laugh, and their wholehearted leap into awareness of their identities as individuals, members of their social groups, and citizens of the wider world. I love to write and to work with young writers-in-training as they hone their expressive skills and find their voices.

My own journey has taken me from Florida, Pennsylvania, and the Virginias to stints in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, and southeast Alaska. I’ve worked as a house painter, a violin teacher, a zoo volunteer, and a sandwich maker on my way to teaching.

Educationally, I’ve earned a BA in philosophy from Wellesley College and an MFA in writing from Goddard College, and I continue to learn with fellow Goddard alums at our annual Clockhouse Writers’s Conference and retreat.

I’ve been fortunate to have a variety of teachers who paid attention to who I am, shared who they were, and gave me clear feedback about what I can improve and what I do well. I’m grateful to them as I strive to live up to their examples.

I’m a gardener, a hiker, a yoga enthusiast, a Zen Buddhist, a new Marylander, a vegetarian, a cat person, and the proud parent of a son studying stage management at the University of Alberta in Canada.

As I enter my twenty-third year in the classroom, I look forward to learning more.
