Embedded Classroom Support
Academic Performance Anxiety
To a point, anxiety can be a positive trait, enabling us to focus and respond. But when anxiety impacts learning, we know that it calls for empathy and understanding.

Support for Academic Performance Anxiety
Structured Academic Environment
Our academic program and scaffolding approach make learning as accessible as possible, helping to reduce anxiety by providing clear expectations and consistent routines.
Growth Mindset Cultivation
We foster a growth mindset by instilling in students the belief that with determination, perseverance, and an open mind, change is not only possible but inevitable.
Personal Connections
Positive peer and adult connections play a very important role in easing anxiety while building self-confidence, trust, and grit. Through smaller classes, lunch bunches, advisories, differentiated academic groups, clubs, and affinity groups, we ensure students feel seen, heard, supported, and part of a community.
Social-Emotional Programming
Programs like Responsive Classroom in kindergarten to grade 4, PRIDE Program and Good Morning McLean in grades 5-8, and the Honor Code in grades 9-12 focus on building a sense of community and emotional safety. Our Restorative Practices, K-12, emphasise empathy, respect, and accountability.
Mindfulness Integration
Mindfulness practices are integrated into the school day, allowing students to relax and be more receptive to learning.
Collaborative Approach
Our Counselors in each division work closely with teachers and administrators to be sure that everyone is supported.
Reviewing & Previewing
Clarity and consistency are fundamental to successful learning, creating a supportive space and sense of safety, alleviating the anxiety that comes with feeling unsure about content and expectations.
Communication & Transparency
Anxiety likes to attach to life’s unknowns, which is why strong, open communication is critical among faculty, with students and their families, and also outside professionals as appropriate.
Mindfulness at McLean
Mindfulness helps reduce anxiety and increase students’ ability to learn by:
- Calming the mind and regulating emotions.
- Building self-awareness and focus.
- Teaching strategies to manage stress.
- Encouraging presence and engagement in the moment.
- Creating a more balanced, positive learning mindset.
Along with this comes improved confidence, independence, and academic engagement!
