Envision McLean Q & A

List of 10 frequently asked questions.

  • Q: What Is Envision McLean?

Envision McLean  is a comprehensive campaign to raise $6 million by June 2020: $2 million in funds for annual operations (through the TRUE BLUE Fundand the Auction) and $4 million in funds earmarked to the Building Project.

  • Q:
When Did Envision McLean Start? When Will It End?

Fundraising began in 2016; however, the Campaign was publicly launched in October 2017. Pledges to the Campaign can be made through June 2019; with payment towards all outstanding pledges extending through June 2020.

  • Q:
When Will Construction On The Building Begin And End?

Construction is scheduled to begin on June 11, 2018 and to conclude during Winter Break in December 2018. Construction will not alter the daily School schedule or the School Calendar. Updates on construction will be published in a forthcoming Envision McLean Newsletter.
  • Q:
What Does The Building Project Entail?

The Building Project will add 7,500 square feet of new program space on our second floor for robotics, STEM, music and visual arts, as well as renovation of existing spaces for physics, fine arts and digital arts classrooms, and an improved reception. A general meeting room, an entry vestibule, a new student lounge, and a rooftop patio will also be added. The project has already contributed a performing arts sound system, an upgraded playing field, and a renovated Learning Cottage. A new LED lighting system installed this school year will be gentle on the environment and on the school's operating budget. It all comes together in an enhanced architectural identity that is consistent with the richness of our program.

  • Q:
Is The Envision McLean Campaign Successful To Date?

Yes! We are well on our way with $3.7 million or 61% of the goal raised by February 2018. Our largest gifts came early in the Campaign and were contributed largely by Trustees. McLean parents have given $2.7 million of the $3.7 million.

  • Q:
Why Is Envision McLean Called A Comprehensive Campaign?

A Comprehensive Campaign raises funding for both annual operations and capital purposes, in our case the Building Project, at the same time. Many schools favor comprehensive campaigns because they avoid confusion from having separate asks for annual and capital purposes and better enable donors to plan their giving.

  • Q:
What Has Been Done So Far?

Several key Campaign initiatives have already been completed. Last spring, we installed a new sound system for our theater and music programs, and over the summer we expanded and renovated the main playing field, improving drainage and adding sprinklers to keep the grass healthy. We also renovated The Learning Cottage where much of our tutoring and strings classes meet. And, we followed our commitment to environmental sustainability and budget discipline by installing LED lighting that will cut energy usage and operating costs by $25,000 annually.

  • Q:
Are Parents Being Asked To Support The Campaign?

Yes. All parents are being asked to contribute to the McLean Campaign, no matter what the size of your gift. We ask parents to maintain their annual giving contributions during the Campaign and to make an "extra" gift or pledge (over-and-above their annual fund and auction support) to the Building Project component of the Campaign. What matters most is that every family makes a gift that is meaningful for them, in their particular circumstances.

  • Q:
How Do We Offer Support For The Campaign?

Please contact Director of Development, Melissa Gray-Hughes, at mgrayhughes@mcleanschool.org if you wish to discuss your gift immediately or to become a solicitor.

  • Q:
How Will Gifts Be Recognized? Are There Naming Opportunities?

Yes. All donations, large and small, will be recognized. We will continue to recognize supporters in the Annual Report of Gifts and through the new Envision McLean Newsletter. (Click here to see the McLean School Magazine/Report of Gifts July 2016-June 2017 ). Walkway bricks will commemorate the gifts at levels up to $1,000. The Atrium Wall of Donors will recognize gifts beginning at $25,000. Larger donations will be recognized through the naming of individual Classrooms, the Entry Vestibule, the Green Wall, Rooftop Patio, and many other opportunities.
