Ruth Kirschenbaum

Grade 3

As a young child, I would often “play school” outside on our farm. Holding a stick I would write words or numbers in sand to teach my younger sister and her friends. The adults thought it was cute, but I was very serious. This was my passion, and I always knew that I wanted to be teacher. I attended university, earned my degree in Special Education with a minor in Elementary Education and fulfilled my goal. I taught in New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and now Maryland at McLean. I have been teaching 3rd grade since 1999. Each year brings new experiences, new ideas and new students, but the joy of teaching remains constant. I love to see the light bulb go off when a concept is understood. I also love the challenge of how to reach a child who needs a different approach. At McLean, we can think out of the box to help our learners.  Maybe one day you will see me with a stick and teaching a lesson in the sand. At McLean, the possibilities are endless.
