I believe that schools hold the responsibility to figure out and meet a child’s needs, not the child’s need to fit the curriculum. I strongly believe in individualized instruction based on a real knowledge of the child’s interests and learning strengths. That’s why I was drawn to McLean; these are the school’s values.”

Figuring out what each child needs to succeed in school is the “puzzle” that has fascinated me throughout my career. As the research shows, the earlier schools remediate, the more effective their work is.

My career started on a very different path. I received my Masters degree in Speech and Drama from Catholic University as well as a stint as an acting teacher at the Studio Theatre in Washington, DC. I have many years experience as a classroom teacher and Director of Tutor Training at the Lab School of Washington; elementary school Learning Specialist at Sidwell Friends School; college professor and researcher in special education at Hunter College in New York City. I've also published studies of early childhood literacy development and techniques of classroom support for students with academic challenges.

Even though my role at McLean has changed from Head of Lower School to Master Teaching Coach and Lead Reading Specialist, I still abide by the guiding motto: children first!
