Emma Burgess

My husband and I (and our cat, Little Dorrit) moved to the area this summer, and as a native of Richmond, VA it is great to be close to home and to family. After graduating from Collegiate School in Richmond, I attended Centre College in Kentucky, where I earned my BA in English with a minor in creative writing. I then moved to Emory University in Atlanta to earn an MA in Teaching with a concentration in Secondary English. For the five years since then, I have been teaching English and Creative Writing at a small, independent school in Daphne on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. I think of teaching as both a calling and a privilege, and I particularly love to guide students as they explore their ideas and identities through the written word. As a high school student I was shy and reserved but found my confidence through reading and writing, and I am passionate about helping others to do the same. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy singing, baking, reading, traveling, being outdoors, and (when I’m in the mood) getting some exercise.

K-12 College Preparatory School Supporting Bright Students’ Individual Strengths and Challenges.

McLean School is an independent, co-educational, K-12 day school serving Maryland, Washington, and Virginia. McLean has for over sixty years been helping students realize their full potential by providing a comprehensive college preparatory program that emphasizes small classes and differentiated instruction. We embrace both traditional learners and ones with mild to moderate learning challenges – dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and challenges related to anxiety and executive functioning. Many of our students excel in some areas while benefiting from support in others.
