We hear it all the time—McLean School transforms lives. McLean is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school for bright students in kindergarten through grade 12. We welcome both traditional learners and those with mild to moderate learning challenges—including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, anxiety, and challenges related to executive functioning.

Wellness is at the heart of everything we do. In small classes with expert teachers and a supportive social environment, students discover their strengths, strengthen their challenges, and find joy in learning. A rich variety of options—including STEM/Robotics, art, music, drama, athletics, clubs, and community service—complements our rigorous core academic programs.

We also incorporate fresh thinking into our curriculum. We planted gardens to increase environmental awareness, added the study of technology and robotics, and recognized the value of mindfulness to reduce stress and aid in focus and learning. In addition to honors and AP classes, a creative partnership with American University enables qualified seniors to take college courses.

At every stage of their development, our students are transformed by the McLean approach. They become insightful, confident learners and their own best advocates. The proof is in their acceptances to highly regarded colleges and their success in college and in life.

History

Established by Lenore and Delbert Foster in 1954, McLean School has been transforming lives for sixty years. McLean’s original mission was to provide a learning environment that would serve the needs and gifts of all kinds of students. After the Fosters retired in 1978, a group of dedicated parents, faculty, and staff formed a nonprofit corporation and relocated McLean to the current Lochinver Lane campus in Potomac, Maryland.
