Academic focus is enhanced when physical activity is part of a student’s day. McLean deliberately builds into each school day time for students to participate in physical education and sports. This break from the rigors of study refreshes the body and mind and establishes a pattern for a healthier life. Integrated health education then reinforces the importance of mind/body well-being.
At McLean, the emphasis on physical activity increases as students progress in developing athletic skills, strategies, and sportsmanship. Spirited athletic competition emerges in matches and games with teams from other schools in the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference (PVAC). For grades 5-12—in addition to boys’ soccer and lacrosse and girls’ volleyball, soccer, and softball—we field boys’ and girls’ teams in cross country, basketball, wrestling, and track and field.
McLean’s small size gives every student an opportunity to belong to a sports team. They experience camaraderie, community, teamwork, and the joys of participation—but McLean athletes have also had considerable success. Most recently, our 2013 Boys Varsity Basketball team was both regular season and Potomac Valley Athletic Conference (PVAC) tournament champions, and our 2014 Girls 7 & 8 Basketball team was the unbeaten PVAC champion.
