Moving Toward Normal: McLean School COVID-19 Policies & Procedures

COVID-19 Policies & Procedures – Fall 2021Moving Toward Normal

Our PlanCommunication from Head of School to McLean School Parent Community

August 19, 2021

We are so looking forward to welcoming your children–our students–back full-time into the classroom so that our experts can do their best job of teaching the way your children learn, and your children can benefit from relationships with their teachers and their peers.

Getting to this point has not been easy. The past year and a half challenged each of us in ways we hadn’t previously imagined. We got through it together with grit, gratitude, and goodwill. While the pandemic is still with us, it is wonderful to be preparing for a return to our normal school schedule, with safeguards to ensure continued community well-being. I am so thankful to all of you, our families, and to our creative and dedicated teachers and staff, who stayed the course and supported our students and one another to deliver the kind of caring and effective research-based education that distinguishes McLean.

McLean’s decision to welcome all students back to campus this fall is informed by medical and educational experts, taking into consideration public health trends and guidance from federal, state, and local agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Maryland Departments of Health and Education. While the Delta variant is driving up COVID-19 rates locally and nationally, transmission rates are much lower in the greater Washington, DC area than in parts of the country with lower vaccination rates. As we have done from the start, we will continue to monitor the situation closely and adapt to changing circumstances.

Continuing our practice of layered protective measures, we will mitigate risks wherever we can to help maintain a safe campus for all of our students, teachers, staff, and visitors. We are confident we can do this while also providing a near-normal environment and school day, but we will need everyone’s cooperation. Our new document, Moving Towards Normal, outlines key COVID-19-related policies and procedures for the opening of this school year. They were developed in accordance with CDC and Maryland state guidelines and designed to create a safe, fulfilling, and effective school experience.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and answer your questions. Please join me for a town hall-style meeting Wednesday evening, August 25, at 7:00 pm at this Zoom link. Also, to ensure a smooth start to the school year, all students, faculty, and staff will need to be tested. Mandatory student testing will be on Sunday, August 29, and Monday, August 30. Please click this link for more information and to sign up. Finally, we are again requiring that all parents, and all students in grades 5 to 12 sign our Community Agreement. Please click here to read and complete it.

We have learned so much since this time last summer–and that includes the fact that this community is even more resourceful and resilient than we knew. I want to thank everyone again for digging deep and doing what it takes to support our students academically, socially, and emotionally. I am proud of our collective ability to meet this moment, and to persevere amidst adversity. Proud yes, but not surprised–after all, we are McLean. It’s what we do.

With tremendous gratitude,

Michael Saxenian
Head of School
