The Music Department at McLean School of Maryland prides itself on the accomplishments of its students as well as the faculty. As an integral part of the school, music is introduced through general music classes to students in Kindergarten and continues through Grade 6. By Grade 3, students have the opportunity to take part in string ensemble or chorus, allowing them to increase their musicianship. These types of performing groups continue throughout all the Middle and Upper school years!
In Middle School, McLean students will have many choices of music participation that allows their musicality to grow such as string ensemble, chorus and instrumental band. Classes are also offered in handbells and guitar.
In the Upper School, performance electives such as Blues Pop & Rock, Jazz Band, Guitar Class and even Chorus enable students’ talents to flourish. Concepts in written and aural music theory are taught throughout these courses to assist each student in becoming a stronger and more skilled performer.
Each division within the Music Department holds at least two seasonal concerts during the school year. Students representing the Music Department assist other departments and programs at McLean by providing music at assemblies, sporting events, open houses, and the annual spring musical.
Ensembles often represent McLean outside of the school community by performing at local venues such as the Montgomery County Nighthawks sporting events and the Strathmore Music Center for the Arts. McLean students also have the opportunity to perform with other students from local independent schools at festivals sponsored by the Independent School Music Directors Association (ISMDA).
