En Garde! During the Middle School elective, Grand Renaissance, students had a chance to try fencing. Having discussed the change in warfare tactics from the Middle Ages, different Renaissance weapons and ideals of swordsmanship, students were allowed to participate in duels to the death!* Middle School Latin teacher Robbie Hitzelberg and Upper School Latin techer Laura Hatmaker demonstrated basic fencing concepts first. Then, students squared off in a dueling tournament. Inigo Montoya would have been forced to use his right hand to keep up!
*By the death we of course mean a best of three, no hits to the head, foam sword match leaving everyone mostly alive and without flesh wounds.
