McLean School of Maryland

5th Grade Science

Welcome to the 2011-12 School Year!

In both 5th and 6th grade science, we’ll start off the year with a Unit on Measurement and practice thinking “metrically”. Fifth grade will then branch out to explore chemistry basics. They’ll learn about the atom, simple elements, and the basic properties of matter through “mixtures and solutions” investigations. Next, students will learn the fundamentals of Experimental Design. They’ll learn how to follow the scientific method while planning and conducting investigations, and design and conduct their own experiment with minimal guidance. Lastly, they’ll learn about the interrelationship between the Earth, Moon, and Sun. They’ll take a stroll down the Space Age timeline, construct a lunar habitat and prepare for a journey to the moon.

Homework is not routinely assigned in this course. When it is, it will be written in the student planner and posted on the homework link. You will also find weekly updates of the activities and topics covered in class posted there.
