McLean School of Maryland

6th grade Science

Welcome to the 2011-12 School Year!

In both 5th and 6th grade science, we’ll start off the year with a Unit on Measurement and practice thinking “metrically”. Sixth grade will then make a beeline to Earth’s Interior. They will build a scale model of Earth’s interior layers and capture interesting features on its surface. They’ll explore the causes of Earthquakes and Volcanoes as they study Plate Tectonics and take on the challenge of building a three-story earthquake resistant structure. The final unit is the Water Cycle. Students will examine the need for clean drinking water in other countries, design and build a water filtration system and propose solutions to bring greater attention to this crisis.

Homework is not routinely assigned in this course. When it is, it will be written in the student planner and posted on the homework link. You will also find weekly updates of the activities and topics covered in class posted there.
