What are some ways I can help my child if they are struggling with homework?
As we move into fourth grade we are trying to prepare the students in order
to make this transition a little easier. Our expectations for homework
increase slightly as we move through the year.
We understand that for some students this increase can be difficult, and can
create frustration and avoidance at home.
We would like to suggest some learning strategies and modifications to
homework that may be made in order to keep within the one hour time frame
expected, and to avoid this frustration (for both students and parents!).
These adjustments may be made at parents' discretion, not at the choice of
the student.
- Do odds or evens on a worksheet (WS).
- For any assignment, parent reads to child while student completes
answers (parent may be scribe for student if written output is an issue)
- Complete a select few of questions rather than all.
- Split the page into sections: designate which section to be
completed, or how many from each section to be completed.
- Set achievable goals for homework time: eg. 15 mins on math, then
break. 15 mins on L/Arts then break etc.
- Circle problems (2 or 3 more from where they are) to complete if
student begins to show frustration.
- Highlight key words as visual reminder for skills focus for the
assignment.
- Highlight blanks to fill in as visual tracker.
- Type assignments if viable.
