McLean School of Maryland

April 27

Dear Lower School Families,

It has been a wonderful and wacky Spirit Week in the Lower School. The students were most patient in the highly anticipated week’s arrival and they supported the “spirit” of each day with great enthusiasm! I am pretty sure that I have indeed convinced a good number of students that I actually DO wear a necktie with my pajamas every night! Crazy socks were … crazy. Our sports jersey day was broad in representation including one of the very first “RG III” shirts made in honor of the recent draft! Our kids were a total mess on mismatch day (a true struggle for me). We end the week with a great deal of Mustang Pride on this free dress Friday. It was a fun week but I would be less than honest were I to say that I am ready to get everyone back into our attire routine.

In addition to a week of wacky days, we also enjoyed some experiential learning opportunities in grades 3 and 4. Diana Pankowski’s 3rd grade class visited the Kreeger Museum as a culmination of their artist project. Included was a tour of this incredible private collection with works by many of the masters such as Picasso, Pissarro, Cezanne, Calder, Chagall, Degas, Van Gogh and many others. They also had an art lesson in the “Monet” room, which displays several pieces by this artist. It was an amazing day and the curator was very impressed with how much the students know about these artists. The entire fourth grade enjoyed a day at Mt. Vernon. The students had an absolutely fabulous time on the field trip on Tuesday! They enjoyed a 4D movie about the Revolutionary War and got to experience, first-hand, how he led the soldiers to victory by outsmarting the larger, stronger, British army. The fourth graders also took a tour of George Washington’s home and saw the tomb where he and Martha Washington remain today. Their favorite part, was of course, the lunch in the Colonial Restaurant where they got to sit down and relax with a meal and their friends.

A number of students across grades and teachers had a great time this afternoon during The Book It! Pizza Lunch. I had the pleasure of stopping by to congratulate the kids on their reading and encourage them to continue to develop their skills. I shared that I too loved to read as a child and could often be found in a corner with a book or comics. Kudos again to Eileen Goldschmidt for her coordination of this annual project.

Marjorie Foreman was indeed overwhelmed by the love and appreciation that was shown to her on Administrative Professionals Day this past Wednesday. She received calls, cards, posters, gifts, chocolates, lunch etc. The Lower School community did a great job at making her feel as special as she does us every day! Thanks to all!

Finally I want to once again (for the millionth time!) remind you that we will be in standardized testing mode all next week. Grades 2-4 will be administered tests in the morning. You may review my letter concerning testing as well as pointers to have your child at his/her best by clicking on Testing. Grades K-4 will participate in a number of activities designed to allow them to decompress from the demands of the morning. We have worked hard to offer fun events including a trek over to Cabin John Park. You have been forwarded electronic and/or hard copy permission forms. Permission Forms must be returned on Monday, April 30.

Have a great weekend!
