McLean School of Maryland

Lower School News & Schedule

Dear Lower School Families,

Once again, there was a great deal of experiential learning taking place in the Lower School this week. Our students, teachers and parents took advantage of several local opportunities to learn outside of their traditional learning spaces. The first grade class spent the morning at Claude Moore Colonial Farm’s “Farm Skills Day” program. They learned how to make wool, candles, and play colonial games. They had a great time touring the farm and meeting 18th century colonists who explained many things about how they made their clothes and food, and why they did not wear shoes during the summer! The second graders took a walk on the wild side as they visited the National Zoo. They enjoyed seeing the animals in their “natural” habitats and other than the less than fortunate timing of arriving around feeding time for the lions, had a total blast. The fourth grade went to Seneca Schoolhouse, a one-room school house in Poolesville, Maryland during the late 1800’s. The students were each given an identity of a student from the actual schoolhouse in 1880 and spent the day being an active participant in a typical school day for that time period. They wrote on slate boards, participated in a spelling bee and sat at the desks that were actually used in the school house in 1880. The kids had a great time comparing what school is like at McLean with what it was like over 100 years ago. Michelle FitzGerald’s grade 4 class got to experience a delicious breakfast this morning! Classmate Maggie T.’s parents purchased the fully catered breakfast at this year’s auction. The members of the Lower School Support Team were up early preparing fresh treats including scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, pancakes (chocolate chip and plain), waffles and fresh berry smoothies!

This was also a big week for expressing thanks and appreciation within the Lower School. First, it was Teacher Appreciation Week. My/our special thanks to the Lower School Parents for providing a delicious breakfast spread in the faculty lounge. Fresh goodies fed both our stomachs and hearts making us very much “feel the love.” Please know that the teachers very much appreciated your efforts to thank them in such a nice way. We felt pride as all the members of the faculty got to see what special parents we have in the division and the McLean community. I also join other prize winners in expressing thanks! Starbucks here I come!!

This week was also National Nurses Week. We are grateful to Susan Burdette and Pat Lincoln, McLean’s tireless nurses, who do such a great job taking care of us and keep all of the students and faculty members going throughout the year! Drop them a quick hello or thank you at sburdette@mcleanschool.org and plincoln@mcleanschool.org.

McLean Girl Scout Troup 3310 would like you to support their Elementary School Book Drive. New or gently used books will be collected on Monday, May 16. The goal is to support deserving students reading over the summer. Please drop off books at the bin near the front office. I hope to see support from the Lower School come Monday morning!

Please mark your calendars to make sure that all library books are back in school by Monday, May 21. Please be sure to check your child’s backpack, bedroom and at home book shelves.

Finally, I want to wish all McLean School community mothers the very happiest of Mother’s Days this weekend. There are few jobs if any where no job description could ever come close to all that the job entails. My best and thanks to each of you.

Happy Weekend to All!!

GOOD THINGS TO KNOW
Reminder: Unless you have special permission, we ask that you not drive your child to school during drop off and pick-up time. Unloading and loading buses means lots of big and little kids, who sometimes do not pay attention to cars and traffic. If you do come to campus — at any time of the day — please be extra vigilant. Thanks for your attention to these safety issues.
